Travel giant TripAdvisor released their most popular destinations across the world this week. Their lists range from the highest-ranked by their users to the most trending spots.
Although not necessarily an expert-curated list, it highlights tourist interest in what has been a tumultuous few years for the industry.
North America saw several cities rank highly in the lists. Here’s a rundown of the top destinations from each North American Region.
Whistler
Those seeking an adventure getaway need look no further than Whistler, in British Columbia. Located an easy jaunt away from Vancouver, visitors can hit the slopes, get stuck in on the trail, or take in some of the wonderful events in the area.
The city hosted the Winter Olympics back in 2010, so don’t worry about a lack of world-class facilities and equipment for your use. It’s even developing something of an art scene if you feel like a change of pace.
Be careful though. It’s very busy on the wrong weekend, so pick your dates wisely before grabbing your snowboard. It’s a year-round destination, a rarity in the snow sports world.
Tofino
The surfing capital of Canada, Tofino was once as far off the beaten track as you could go. Its extreme isolation lends to its stunning scenery, embodied by its perfect sandwiching between the Pacific Ocean and wooded wilderness.
Out of season, the town is home to only a few thousand people but explodes with life in the peak season. Don’t expect to find too many big franchises here, a big emphasis on local businesses makes it an exciting place to eat, drink, and be merry after a day of hiking, whale watching, or wave-catching.
Canada entry restrictions
Currently, only fully vaccinated travelers can enter Canada for the purpose of tourism. Fully vaccinated in this case means the traveler has received a full cycle of an approved vaccine at least fifteen days before arriving in Canada. A negative PCR test is also required to get in and anyone entering is subject to an additional randomized test.
Las Vegas
Sin City was the only city from the United States to make the top twenty-five. World-renowned for its plethora of casinos and exuberant nightlife, the city has been enjoying a strong year.
But there’s so much more to Vegas than casino floors. Visitors can catch one of the many spectacular shows like the famous Cirque du Soleil, or one of the superstar residencies like that of Katy Perry or Cher.
Don’t be put off by its reputation as an adults-only destination. There’s fun to be had for the whole family. Take the little ones on the High Roller Observation Wheel to get the best view of the city, or maybe swing by Hersey World to please their sweet tooth.
Oahu
This Hawaiian Island barely needs an introduction. Its splendorous natural beauty, friendly atmosphere, and laid-back lifestyle make it a winner for everyone who travels here.
Another destination with endless options for every traveler, those with inclinations for the natural world can speak days hiking through the tropical paradise or catching waves on one of the many beaches dotting the island.
Those looking for a relaxing getaway can enjoy an easy-going time at one of their high-end resorts, while those interested in the history of the archipelago can delve into the rich culture of the Hawaiian people.
USA Entry Requirements
Non-US citizens or residents traveling to the US from abroad need to be fully vaccinated before entering, as well as having a PCR test no more than one day before you depart. Even those who are citizens or residents will need to have proof of a negative PCR test to enter.
Hawaii functions under the same regulations for International travelers. For domestic travel, they differ from other states in requiring a PCR test or full vaccination.
Cancun
Cancun has enjoyed a tremendous year and has skyrocketed in popularity. Mexico’s loose entry restrictions in comparison to many of the other major beach spots have given it a leg up on the competition and it has taken full advantage of its time in the limelight.
The city is known around the world for its world-class all-inclusive resorts, as well as pristine beaches and crystal blue water. Those looking for a cheaper option can find an incredible array of hotels and accommodations.
Throw in a world-class museum and some stunning Mayan ruins nearby, and the makings of a great trip are all at hand in Cancun. The arrival of the Maya Train system next year will provide even easier access to the rest of the country.
Cabo San Lucas
Cancun’s opposite number on the west coast of the country is also having a strong year thanks to the lax regulations. It’s only a hop, skip, and a jump from many of the US’ west coast cities, making it a popular destination for a quick getaway.
Its location on the far side of the country has kept the European crowds in Cancun, but this delectable city isn’t going anywhere.
Take a ride out to its iconic stone arches on a glass-bottom boat as seals dart in and out of the harbor. A little further out to sea tourists will find themselves in prime whale-watching waters. Back on dry-land, an eclectic nightlife will keep you up well past your bedtime, and the top-notch hotels provide the perfect environment to recuperate the next day.
Mexico Entry Requirements
Mexico is one of the easiest countries in the world to enter at the moment. There’s currently no vaccination or PCR test requirement to enter the country. Once in, visitors will have to work around the regulations being enforced in regards to Mexico’s epidemiological traffic light system. Cancun and Cabo are both under the Orange designation, meaning that hotels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions will be forced to operate with reduced capacity. Visitors should factor this into any decisions before departing.
